4 reasons why every Tech geek should have an indoor plant…and how to not kill yours

Indoor Plants for Tech Geeks

As a Tech geek, you’ll be amazed how hazardous ‘ a regular day’ is; noise from power generators, radiation from devices, eye strain from screens, stiffness from sitting for hours, little physical exercise, junk food, weird music pounding your ear drums (for we rock fans)…. I could go on. The surprising thing is you hardly ever know you’re putting yourself through these, till someone mentions it simply because you’re so caught up in doing what you love.

One increasingly alarming hazard is the poor quality of air we Tech geeks breathe. Before now, I used to think working indoors meant I breathe cleaner air. You can imagine how shocked I was when I learnt that the air I breathe (indoors) is even more polluted than outdoor air. Plastics, paint, kitchen fumes and household cleaning products to name a few. Inhaling these in mild doses might not be so harmful but multiply this by the several hours you spend indoors over the years, what a disaster!

Indoor plants to the rescue!

The good news is that indoor plants can greatly help protect you by removing these harmful compounds from the air you breathe (an example of Phytoremediation) and they’re much cheaper than using electronic air purifiers.

As a Tech. geek, some important benefits of indoor plants to you are:

  1. Air purification:

Indoor plants are immensely beneficial for removing pollutants, making your air cleaner and healthier

  2. Improved creativity and productivity:

Indoor plants could help boost your mood, performance and creativity while working

  3. Aesthetics:

Palms and Lilies could make a room come alive, adding beauty to your work space

  4. Leisure activity:

Catering for your plants is a great way to cool off and learn something new; besides, you never know how pruning your plant could help you figure out that bug in your code (the Eureka moment).

Which indoor plant do I need and where can I get one?

When I realized I needed to get myself an indoor plant ASAP (I ended up getting four), the next challenge was getting the right plant. I was tempted to just take a walk and take some from any nice plant by the way side. I wouldn’t advise you do this as you might bring in pest infested or even poisonous plants (terrible idea if you have pets or kids around).

The best thing to do is ask a local gardener which plants are best suited for indoor use (have air purification + aesthetics in mind).

Tips from a fellow Tech geek who owns and loves indoor plants

Take Baby Steps

Before I graduated to indoor plants, I started with an outdoor Aloe Vera plant

Aloevera plant

Aloe Vera is very easy to maintain for outdoor use and has many health benefits. If you manage to kill an outdoor Aloe Vera plant then I would love to take a selfie with you because you’re an endangered specie 🙂 .

Start All-Green

I would advise you start with a plant that has broad and all green leaves.

Ideal indoor plants for Tech geeks

Such would be able to perform better under limited lighting conditions. You would also need one that doesn’t require much watering as you might forget your routines at the start (I find corn plants ideal here).

Place the plant pot on a stand or tray

The plant pots should be perforated beneath to allow excess water escape. This poses a challenge when watering as you might have to mop the floor or your table when you overwater. This is where a stand or a tray comes in handy.

Indoor plant stand

Indoor plant tray

A tray collects excess water which you can later drain off while a stand allows you to temporarily place a small container beneath the pot to collect excess water shortly after watering.

Having an indoor plant is one decision you’ll be happy you made, I’m one example.
